Five Orange teams were in action for the third week of the fall season. The men’s and women’s cross country teams posted strong finishes at the Binghamton Invitational. The Syracuse field hockey team totaled a 1-1 record with a 4-3 victory against Central Michigan on Friday night. Men’s soccer remained unbeaten following a 2-1 triumph against Seton Hall and 1-1 draw versus James Madison. Orange volleyball is riding a season-high four-match win streak and was crowned the 2007 Big Orange Tournament champions after an unblemished 3-0 record. Syracuse women’s soccer tallied a 1-1 record on the week with a home-opening 2-0 win against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night.
The Orange men’s and women’s cross country teams continued the 2007 season with a trip south on Interstate-81 for the Binghamton Invitational. Freshman Kathleen Hursey paced the women’s second-place finish with a team-best sixth-place time of 19:06.40. Sophomore Stephanie Slekis finished eighth with a time of 19:12.80. Freshman Michael Brocks led the Orange men’s team with a 13th-place tally and time of 26:38.30. Fellow classmate Steven Weeks posted a 14th-place time of 26:45.40.

The Syracuse field hockey team improved its record to 5-0 following a 4-3 win against Central Michigan. Freshman Maggie Befort deposited two goals in the win while seniors Gloria Nantulya and Jessica Lerew each tallied one. Junior goalkeeper Heather Hess posted a season-high 11 stops on 12 shots as the Orange’s five-game win streak came to an end following a 1-0 loss against Temple. Nantulya fired a team-high three shots versus the Owls.

The Orange men’s soccer team remained unbeaten after posting a 1-0-1 record. Syracuse posted a 2-1 win against Seton Hall behind a game-winning goal from sophomore Hansen Woodruff in the 67th minute. Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev tallied the game’s equalizer in the 41st minute. Junior Kyle Hall notched his first goal of the season as the Orange played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with James Madison.

The Orange volleyball team is riding a four-match win streak following victories against Albany (3-0), Princeton (3-2), Fordham (3-0) and Texas Tech (3-1). Sophomore Kacie MacTavish, who tallied three double-doubles on the week and now has six for the season, was named the Big Orange Tournament Most Valuable player. Senior Joscie Kaup earned all-tournament accolades. In Syracuse’s 3-0 sweep against Fordham, 13th-year head coach Jing Pu captured his 250th career win with the Orange.

Goals by sophomore Chelsea Berry and senior Jen Taormina led the Orange women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win against Fairleigh Dickinson in its 2007 home-opener. Taormina was also credited with an assist. Junior Karrah Benson’s penalty kick cut the Syracuse deficit to one goal before Rhode Island added an insurance tally for a 3-1 win, evening the Syracuse record at 2-2-0.
