PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse senior field hockey forward Gloria Nantulya was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Orange to a 2-0 week with the game-winning goal in both games.
The senior tallied both of SU’s goals in the Orange’s 2-1 triumph of Rutgers in the BIG EAST opener for both schools. She followed up that performance by scoring the game-winning goal two days later in the 2-1 victory against Hofstra.
Two of Nantulya’s goals, her first and last, both came off Orange penalty corners. Her second was set up brilliantly by freshman midfielder Maggie Befort.
Nantulya now leads Syracuse in both goals with seven and points with 15. She has also tallied a team-best three game-winning goals. Coming into this season, the senior had only one assist and one shot to her credit in 43 career games.
Syracuse ran its overall record to 7-1 with a pair of 2-1 wins versus Rutgers and Hofstra. The Orange has only played one game this year decided by more than one goal, a 6-4 win at Colgate to open the season. SU has tied its best start since opening 7-1 in 1990.
Syracuse travels to Louisville Sept. 21 and faces off against Saint Louis Sept. 22.
