LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior forward Jessica Lerew scored five minutes into the contest and junior goalkeeper Heather Hess made 11 saves, but the Syracuse field hockey team was unable to hold onto its early advantage, losing at No. 16 Louisville, 2-1, in double overtime. The loss, only SU’s second of the season, puts the Orange at 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Cardinals improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the league.

“We played our hearts out, but we just didn’t get the result we wanted,” head coach Ange Bradley. “Louisville was a little stronger than us in the end, but we’ll be back. We’ve got some things we need to work on, and we’ll be back strong in the future.”

Lerew capitalized on a scramble in front of the UofL cage to put Syracuse ahead, 1-0. Freshman midfielder Maggie Befort knocked the ball to Lerew who beat Marie-Claire Heller for her third goal of the year.

Louisville tied the game seven minutes later when Kayla May put home a rebound.

The Cardinals blasted the SU goal with 21 shots in regulation, but could not get another past Hess, sending the game into overtime.

UofL recorded three more shots in the first 15-minute bonus session, but Hess was again up to the challenge.

Two more shots were sent Hess’ way in just the first five minutes into the second overtime before Allison Maffitt dribbled in from 30 yards out and put the winning goal into the cage.

Louisville outshot Syracuse 27-7 and held a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners.

Hess registered 11 saves, seven in regulation and two in each overtime session. Heller made three saves for the Cardinals.

Syracuse remains in Louisville for a contest with St. Louis on Saturday at 3 p.m.
