At the age of seven Syracuse University women’s basketball junior Chandrea Jones had an important choice to make. The second grader was playing basketball and involved in Girl Scout’s, but her mother wanted her to choose between the two. Jones decided that being a Girl Scout wasn’t for her, and decided to stick with basketball.
Time would show that Jones made the right choice. The Baltimore, Maryland native began her high school basketball career at the Institute of Notre Dame with a 31-point game. A two-time All-Baltimore City Player of the Year, Jones left high school having amassed 2,252 points during her four year career.
Jones continued her success on the court at Odessa College, leading the team to two consecutive appearances in the NJCAA Division I Championship. Jones earned First-Team All-America honors after leading the Lady Wranglers to a National Championship title in 2007.
“The highlight of my career so far has to be winning the national championship this past year at Odessa College,” said Jones. “It felt great. I waited so long for a championship because when I was in high school we would always make it to the championship but we never won, then when I got to Odessa we made it to the championship our first year and lost but we came back the next year and took it.”
Though she plans to pursue a career in basketball after graduating, playing either in the WNBA or overseas, Jones is focused on spending the next two years helping to build the SU women’s basketball program.
“I want to be a part of making the program better, and hopefully help the team win more games than people expect.”
