COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Six different players deposited goals as the Syracuse Orange field hockey squad rolled to an 8-1 BIG EAST victory versus the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday, Sept. 28 at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md. Syracuse improves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. Georgetown moves to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Six different players deposited goals as the Syracuse Orange field hockey squad rolled to an 8-1 BIG EAST victory versus the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday, Sept. 28 at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md. Syracuse improves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. Georgetown moves to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
The 9-2 mark after 11 games is SU’s best since 2001, when the Orange also went 9-2. The eight goals are the most the Orange has scored since an 8-1 dismantling of Albany in 2003.
Freshmen Lelia Sacré and Maggie Befort tallied two goals of the Orange and Leigh Fawcett registered one goal and two assists. Senior Gloria Nantulya recorded three assists, tying a school record, and fellow senior Jessica Lerew notched one goal and one assist. Sophomore Tracy Deitrick and freshman Kristin Girouard both added a goal and junior Brittany Shannon registered one assist. Deitrick’s goal was the first of her career.
“We played very well and stayed consistent throughout,” head Orange coach Ange Bradley said. “It was our best game from start to finish this season and I was pleased with our overall performance.”
Sacré scored the first tally of the game, an unassisted goal at 5:37. Girouard put the score at 2-0 at 13:41 after getting a pass from Lerew after an SU penalty corner. Befort deposited the Orange’s third goal of the first half, tipping in a Nantulya cross with three minutes remaining in the half.
Befort’s second goal of the game and eighth of the season was created by a Shannon pass, while Sacré scored off another SU penalty corner with Fawcett providing the stop and Nantulya the push.
The Orange battled for possession with Nantulya sending a pass to Lerew who then laced a shot through Georgetown defenders at 57:17.
Fawcett’s goal was an unassisted goal off a breakaway and SU’s final tally of the night was tipped into the cage by Deitrick.
Katie Lachman spoiled a Syracuse shutout when she scored a goal at 66:12 on a dish from Willemijn Wijsman.
Syracuse outshot Georgetown 24-5 and held a 6-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Syracuse goalkeeper Heather Hess tallied three saves allowing no goals for the win before reliever freshman Christina Puggi came in, allowing the Lachman goal in just shy of 16 minutes of playing time.
Georgetown goalkeeper Tiffany Kaszuba started in the cage and posted six saves, allowing three goals before Deirdre Crovo relieved her for the second half. Crovo allowed five goals, posting zero saves.
Syracuse remains in the Washington, D.C. area for a contest with No. 12 American on Sunday at 2 p.m.
