LAS VEGAS, NV -- Former Syracuse standout Carmelo Anthony, a member of the gold-medal winning USA team at the recently-completed FIBA Americas Championship, set USA Basketball records while helping the club to an unblemished 10-0 record this summer.
Anthony, the proud owner of an NCAA championship ring with the Orange, helped Team USA earn a berth in the 2008 Olyjmpics in Bejing, China. He started all nine games he participated in and averaged 21.2 points-per-game for the Americans.
His scoring average topped the previous USA Basketball mark set by Charles Barkley, a member of the original "Dream Team" in 2002. Anthony also tallied 191 points, passing Gary Payton's standard. Anthony's 5.2 rebound average ranked just behind team leader Dwight Howard. He shot .613 from the field (65-of-106), .578 from the three-point line (26-of-45) and .714 from the free-throw stripe (35-of-49). He ranked second on Team USA in three-point baskets, trailing only Michael Redd, 29-26.
