PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of Orange soccer players were recognized by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday, Sept. 3 for their performances during the season’s first weekend. Senior captain Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) was selected as the league’s Defensive Player of the week and junior goalkeeper Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, Ontario) was named to the conference’s weekly honor roll. Both players were key cogs in the Orange’s unbeaten showing at the Wolstein Soccer Classic hosted by Ohio State.
Peetoom, SU’s 2007 team captain, earned a place on the all-tournament team. The senior organized an Orange defense that posted back-to-back shutouts against Big Ten foes Penn State and Ohio State. In the season opener, the Orange defeated Penn State ,4-0, and Peetoom contributed an assist in the victory. Against Ohio State on Sunday, he helped keep the defending Big Ten scoring champion Xavier Balc and the rest of the Buckeyes off the scoreboard, preserving a scoreless draw.
It is the third weekly plaudit for Peetoom in his career. He also earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2005 and Rookie of the Week accolades in 2004.
Smith started the first two matches of his career versus the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes, respectively. Against Penn State, he played all 90 minutes and made three saves to earn his first shutout. He also played the first 79:13 of the championship match against Ohio State on Sunday before being removed due to injury. He did not allow a goal and also had three saves in that contest.
It is the first conference honor for Smith.
Connecticut’s O’Brian White was selected as BIG EAST Player of the Week, while Chris Cahill (Notre Dame) was picked as Goalkeeper of the Week and Brayan Martinez (Seton Hall) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.
Syracuse returns to the field Friday, Sept. 7 at 5:00 p.m. when it meets Seton Hall at the Mayor’s Cup in Oneonta.
