Five Syracuse teams were in action during the second week of the fall season, including three making their season debuts. The Syracuse cross country teams began competition Saturday at the Harry Lang Invitational. First-year Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley has guided the Orange field hockey team to a perfect 4-0 start while men’s soccer captured its season-opener on Friday with a resounding 4-0 decision against Penn State. Volleyball opened its 2007 home schedule with a 3-0 win against Buffalo. Women’s soccer broke out of the gates in 2007 with a 2-1 win against Oakland on Friday afternoon.
Cross Country
The Syracuse men and women's cross country teams began the 2007 season at the Harry Lang Invitational. Freshman Erin Schirm posted a first-place finish in the 6,000-meter run and senior Jillian Kosinski tallied a fifth-place finish in the 4,200-meter run. The Orange men's cross country team placed first in the 6,000-meter run and the women's team finished second in the 4,200-meter run.

The Syracuse field hockey team extended its early season success with two wins against Maine and Dartmouth. The Orange overcame a three goal deficit with a 4-3 overtime win against the Black Bears. Graduate student Leigh Fawcett fired 10 shots and recorded two goals, including the game-winning goal 11 minutes into overtime. Freshman Maggie Befort’s penalty stroke score early in the second half proved to the decisive tally against the Big Green. Junior goalkeeper Heather Hess collected six stops in the win.

The Syracuse men’s soccer team opened the 2007 season with a resounding 4-0 shutout against Penn State at the Wolstein Soccer Classic hosted by Ohio State University. Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev and junior Karol Wasielewski scored their first career goals for the Orange. Junior Spencer Schomaker and sophomore Hansen Woodruff also tallied goals in the win. After playing to a 0-0 draw against host Ohio State on Sunday, Syracuse was awarded second-place in the two-day tournament. Goalkeepers Robert Cavicchia and Robert Smith combined to collect the shutout against the Buckeyes.

The Syracuse volleyball team opened its 2007 home schedule with a 3-0 sweep of in-state rival Buffalo. Senior Cheryl Cobbina paced the Orange offense with 15 kills while sophomore Samantha Ainsworth added 22 assists. The Orange posted a 1-2 finish at the Sheraton Hilton Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron. Syracuse posted a 3-1 decision against Wright State behind Cobbina’s team-high 25 kills and senior Joscie Kaup’s team-high 29 digs. Kaup became Syracuse’s all-time career digs leaders after her 19 digs against Akron raised her career total to 1,806 and eclipsed former SU player Rachel Watson’s (1996-99) all-time mark of 1,791. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish received all-tournament recognition after tallying 39 kills, a 3.55 kills per game average and 42 digs in three matches.

The Syracuse women’s soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 2-1 win against Oakland. Junior Karrah Benson and senior Jen Taormina each tallied goals for the Orange while sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hatten made a sprawling save in the 81st minute to preserve the win. Freshman Megan Bellingham deposited her first career goal in Syracuse’s close 2-1 loss to Michigan State. Bennett-Hatten collected three stops against the Spartans.
