The Orange football team will pack it's bags this weekend and make the almost-900 mile trip to Iowa for an 8:00 p.m. game at Iowa this Saturday (Big Ten Network). The Orange and the Hawkeyes are not strangers. The teams battled to a double-overtime game a year ago in the Carrier Dome and head coach Greg Robinson is focused on the task at hand.
"It seems like ancient history since last Friday and I would just keep it ancient history," Robinson said at his Tuesday news conference. "I really look forward to getting ready for the game against Iowa. Iowa is a good football team. They are a really well-coached football team. We know that (Iowa head coach) Kirk Ferentz and his staff do a great job. The idea of going into their environment, which is a great college football environment to play in, and play it in a night ball game on the Big Ten Network is a plus. It's a great opportunity for our team. We have our work cut out for us, there is no doubt. At the same time, I look forward to watching the development of our team this week."
Syracuse heads to Iowa's Kinnick Stadium for the first time since 1976, while it will be Robinson's first visit.
"To me it's an opportunity, it really is," Robinson said. "When you go on the road it's a great challenge, especially into an environment like this. Iowa is a great place to play. I don't care who you are. Anywhere you talk to people -- I've had players in pro football who are from Iowa and it's a prideful place. I just know that environment will be a great challenge for us. Going on the road is the ultimate thing in college football and in pro football, as well."
Freshman defensive back Mike Holmes will likely see action for the second-straight week. Against Washington Holmes played in the secondary and on special teams, making his first appearance for the Orange. Robinson has seen good things from him since training camp.
"He's had a very good training camp," Robinson said. "He has physical skills, but I think he has a football maturity about him that there wasn't a real concern about how he would perform in the first game."
