Same place, same race, same problem, cancellation. The Syracuse University women’s rowing team went to Philadelphia on October 26 to start something it never finished; the Head of the Schuylkill Race. There was just one problem; the race was cancelled for the second year in a row. Race officials made the decision to cancel the race because of large debris in the river.
The cancellation was frustrating for the women. Team members and coaches say the process is disappointing. The team trains for a race, drives many hours to reach the destination, and then has to get right back on the road to go home.
Another frustrating element for the Orange is the team does not have a lot of opportunities to race; when a race is cancelled, it can’t be made up later in the season.
Although the cancellation of the Head of the Schuylkill is not what the Orange was hoping for, coaches say they would rather not race then put the team in danger.
