Davis and Cherundolo to Share Stage at CNY National Football Foundation Dinner

Syracuse University senior Dowayne Davis (Bronx, N.Y.), and former Orange football standout John C. Cherundolo ‘70 will be honored at the Central New York Chapter of the National Football Foundation (CNY NFF) Awards Dinner on Sunday, January 27 at the Turning Stone in Verona, N.Y. Davis is the 2008 CNY NFF Scholar Athlete of the Year and Cherundolo will receive the Distinguished American Award, the highest honor presented by the local chapters of the NFF to a person who has demonstrated great civic presence in the community. The annual dinner recognizes football programs in Central New York.
A 2006 BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection and a member of Syracuse’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for four semesters, Davis is currently completing his information management and technology degree coursework. He closed his Syracuse career ranked 10th on the career tackles by a defensive back record list with 216, including 61 in 2007. He started 35 consecutive games at strong safety and cornerback.
Cherundolo, who was an honorable mention All-American offensive tackle and a third-team Academic All-American, lettered for the Orange from 1967 through 1969. He earned his B.A. from SU’s College of Arts & Sciences in 1970, his M.P.A. from SU’s Maxwell School of Citizenship in 1972 and graduated from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1973. Following his senior year, he earned invitations to play in the North South All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl. He serves on the Syracuse University Athletics Department Board of Directors and is a member SU Football Lettermen’s Club. In 1993 he was honored as a Syracuse University LetterWinner of Distinction.
Cherundolo is currently an Acting Supreme Court Judge, sitting in Onondaga County. He began his legal career in private law practice in Syracuse with the law firm of Hancock & Estabrook. In 1983, he and partner, Anthony Bottar, founded Cherundolo, Bottar & Leone, P.C., practicing law to help victims and their families in personal injury litigation.
A member of the Syracuse College of Law’s Board of Advisors, Cherundolo is a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (a prestigious group of which there are only 500 members in the United States). He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and is an adjunct professor of law and a member of the Board of Advisors at the Syracuse University College of Law. Cherundolo has been consistently named in The Best Lawyers in America for almost two decades and in Who’s Who in American Law. He has served in many leadership roles for multiple legal associations and in the government and is actively involved in many other community activities, committees and foundations. Cherundolo is one of the legal profession’s best-known speakers.
