In anticipation of their upcoming spring schedule, the women’s rowing team introduced new workout routines. For the first time, the Orange incorporated pilates and yoga into their training regimen for the winter cycle.
“Pilates and yoga emphasize core strength, flexibility and relaxation – all things that are extremely important in rowing. It is a natural fit for cross training,” said head coach Kris Sanford. “I am constantly looking for new ways to stress core strength as it is so vital in injury prevention.”

Sanford anticipates that the new workouts will help the Orange in areas exceeding the field, or water, of play.

“I fully expect that the addition of these classes will help us to address some of these issues, as well as helping people to manage everyday stress that naturally comes with being a student–athlete,” Sanford said.
Pilates and yoga, along with other core strength and stretching routines, will be an everyday part of training for
the next 6 weeks until the Orange gets back out on the water.
“As a coach, it is important to find different ways to achieve your desired goals in teaching the basic principles and fundamentals of your sport,” Sanford said.

Sanford hopes the new training techniques will help keep the team active and motivated on their goals for the upcoming season.
“Athletes get bored. Adding pilates and yoga classes gives the team a new approach to looking at some of the basics that we are constantly working on to improve,” Sanford added.
The Orange puts its new training regimen to the test when it opens the spring season against Boston University on March 29.
