SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team travels to Hamden, Conn. this Friday for two non-conference matchups with the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Friday, Oct 17 at 5 p.m. and Sat. Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Center. Both teams are looking to record their first win of the season. This weekend’s twinbill marks the final two contests of a seven-game road stretch for the Orange.
Syracuse hung tough in its first two conference games in Pittsburgh against Robert Morris. The Orange lost each contest by one goal, 3-2 and 1-0. Quinnipiac is looking to rebound from 7-0 and 5-3 losses against St. Cloud State.
Syracuse will break the ice at home on Friday, Oct. 31 against Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. for the Orange’s first home ice hockey game in program history.
Skelly Secures Syracuse’s First CHA Award
Freshman winger Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) became the first member of the Orange ice hockey team to garner a CHA award. On Monday, Skelly was named the CHA Rookie of the Week. Skelly punched in Syracuse’s first powerplay goal in program history against Robert Morris on Saturday night. She was also awarded an assist on lineman Lisa Mullan’s (Victoria, British Columbia) first career goal. Skelly is tied for third in the conference in points scored (2 G, 2 A) with Niagara’s Frances McPhail. She is tied with five other CHA skaters for goals scored, as well. Skelly is also even with eight others in third place with two assists through five games. Nationally, Skelly is tied for 21st in points per game for all rookies with Connecticut’s Rebecca Hewett. Skelly leads the Orange with four points. In five games, she has registered two goals and two assists, including Syracuse’s landmark first goal nine seconds into the Colgate contest. Skelly has scored first for the Orange in both contests SU has put the puck in the net.
Schoedel Reaches Orange Milestone
Junior goalkeeper Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) recorded her 100th career save for the Orange early in the first period against Robert Morris, finishing with 31 total on Friday night. Schoedel made 127 total saves in two seasons (11 games total) at the University of New Hampshire. SU’s goalie eclipsed her two-season total at UNH in Friday night’s contest, totaling 130 stops in just four games. Schoedel reinforced Friday’s act with 21 more saves against the Colonials on Saturday. In 278:33 minutes, Schoedel has turned away 151 shots. SU’s netminder recorded a season-high 41 saves in the Orange’s October 3rd contest at Wisconsin. Schoedel has compiled a .899 save percentage through five matches.
Mullan Makes Presence Felt
Freshman forward Lisa Mullan (Victoria, British Columbia) notched her first career goal on the powerplay as the Syracuse ice hockey team registered a season-high 23 shots in a 3-2 setback to Robert Morris at the Clearview Arena on Saturday night. Mullan is second on the team with three points and tied for second in assists. SU’s winger recorded her first point against Colgate on freshman Janelle Malcolm’s (Edmonton, Alberta) second goal. Mullan accrued two points on Saturday against the Colonials by way of her powerplay tally and the assist on Skelly’s breakthrough powerplay goal. Mullan is tied for second in the league in assists and fifth in the league in points.
Orange Power Play On-Point
Megan Skelly made history for Syracuse when she netted the team’s first power-play goal of the season at 10:18 of the first period against Robert Morris on Saturday night. Freshman Lisa Mullan (Victoria, British Columbia) and senior Nikki Leone (Trenton, Ontario) received credit for the assists. The Orange power-play struck again in the third stanza when Mullan scored her first career goal from a Skelly helper, just 13 seconds into the penalty.
Leone Returns to Hamden in Orange
Senior defenseman Nikki Leone (Trenton, Ontario) returns to Hamden, Conn. to take on her old teammates at Quinnipiac. Leone transferred from Quinnipiac to play for the Orange this season. Leone played in 87 contests for the Bobcats in three seasons, missing only one contest. She tallied 11 career goals, including two powerplay goals, and 21 career assists with the Bobcats. Leone has registered two assists for Syracuse this season, tied for most on the team with Skelly and Mullan.
Crackin’ Quinnipiac
Quinnipiac, a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, is 0-4, losing two games to #2 ranked Wisconsin by counts of 10-0 and 7-3. In addition to the two loses in Madison, Wis., the Bobcats lost twice at home to St. Cloud State Huskies by scores of 7-0 and 5-3. Quinnipiac’s offense has been powered by Janine Duffy and Kallie Flor. Duffy, a junior forward, leads the team with three goals, all of which have been assisted by Flor. Goaltender Nanna Holm-Glaas has grounded the Bobcat defense by putting up a .804 save percentage and blocking 152 shots in four games.
