SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Casey Ramirez scored in the 105th minute to give the Orange women’s soccer team a 2-1 double overtime victory against Seton Hall at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 17. It was Ramirez’s second goal of the season, both of which have been game-winners.
A scramble in front of the goal led to game-winning play. After the ball bounced off players from both teams, it deflected to Ramirez, who found the back of the net with her shot from the top of the box to give the Orange its first win in its last five games.
“When you look back over the season, the number of chances we’ve had is outrageous compared to the number of goals we’ve scored. I’ve asked the players ‘can you imagine if we’d have put one or two of those in each game’” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “I’ve asked the players to believe in themselves. We’ve done so many things well and so many things right throughout the course of the season, but we haven’t been rewarded. Fortunately for the players, they were rewarded tonight by scoring two goals.”
The Orange (5-8-2, 2-5-1) had taken an early lead when Kaitlin Robbins (Watertown, N.Y.) scored her first career goal on an assist from Chelsea Berry (Lowville, N.Y.) at the 21:51 mark. Syracuse maintained the lead until the Pirates’ (5-8-2, 1-6-1) Katie Andreski scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute to tie the score.
Both teams had chances to win the game in the overtime periods. Seton Hall was awarded a penalty kick in the first sudden-victory overtime period, but Nikki Gross’ shot sailed over the crossbar to preserve the tie. In the second overtime period, Karrah Benson’s shot off a corner kick was headed for the net before being knocked away at the goal line by a Seton Hall defensive player.
The Orange outshot the Pirates, 15-9 and had four corner kicks to three for Seton Hall. SU goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan (Burke, Va.) recorded six saves, while Seton Hall’s Elizabeth Bond had eight.
The win improves Syracuse’s home record to 5-2-2 this season. The five wins at the SU Soccer Stadium are the most for the Orange since the 2004 squad won five games on its home field.
Syracuse will play its final regular-season home game on Sunday when it hosts No. 21/15 Rutgers at 1 p.m. Prior to the game the Orange will honor members of this year’s senior class. Admission is free of charge.
