Yesterday, the No. 1 ranked Orange hosted the No. 9 ranked University of Connecticut at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The two BIG EAST rivals went head-to-head for the 31st time, with the Huskies prevailing in the end, 1-0. 862 fans were in attendance for a rivalry that always seems to fill the stands regardless of the sport being played. The Orange outshot the Huskies, 14-6, and held a 13-5 advantage on penalty corners.
Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor’s team-best 48 points are tied atop Syracuse’s single-season chart (Yvonne Milionis, 1990). They are also the most ever for a senior. Her team-high 18 goals are second on the Orange’s single-season list. Taylor’s assist total is also a senior-class best. Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica’s 47 points are third on Syracuse’s single-season list and her 19 assists are first. Her goals (14), assists (19) and points (47) are all-time highs for a freshman at SU. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess has started every game in cage for SU, recording a 1.10 goals-against-average and a .789 save percentage.
Syracuse and American has met three times before, with the Crusaders boasting a 2-1 advantage. The Orange is 1-0 all-time against the Crusaders in Syracuse, defeating Holy Cross, 3-0, in 1986, the first meeting in the series.
Sophomore Kara Gonnerman scored two goals but it was enough as Holy Cross (4-9, 0-3) lost a 4-3 decision to Colgate in Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Erin Singleton had six saves. With 100 saves so far on the season, Singleton has a 2.12 goals against average and a .775 save percentage. Making all 13 starts, Singleton has a 4-9 record including one shutout . Kristin Schulz leads Holy Cross in goals with seven and points with 16 • Alanna Sikorski has dished out a team-best five assists.
