Orange Enters Early Test vs. #2 Wisconsin

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women’s ice hockey team concluded its first game in program history on Wednesday night against Colgate. Freshman Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) buried SU’s landmark goal just nine seconds into the contest. The Orange jumped ahead 2-0 later in the first period thanks to Janelle Malcolm’s (Edmonton, Alberta) precise wrist shot. Junior goaltender Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) astonished the crowd at Starr Rink by stoning numerous Raiders’ chances, 34 in all. Skelly netted SU’s final goal with just 40 second remaining in the regulation.

Following the 4-3 loss at Colgate, Syracuse faces a test against the #2 Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center this weekend. The puck drops on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 4 at noon. This weekend marks the first time the Orange will square-off against a top ten team in the country. The Badgers will celebrate their 10-year anniversary as a Division I program on Friday and Saturday.

Skelly Has Skills
Freshman Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) not only scored Syracuse’s landmark first goal, but the forward found the back of the net in just nine seconds. Skelly lit the lamp again with just 40 seconds remaining in regulation to bring the Orange within one goal of Colgate, 4-3. Skelly’s quick tally may be a Syracuse record for fastest goal scored for many a long time.

Schoedel Shuts Down the Opposition
Junior netminder Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) played a superb game in goal, turning aside 34-of-38 Raiders’ attempts. Schoedel impeded 14 shots in the third period, but defended the pipes notably in the second period. The Orange was outshot 15-1 in the second session. Schoedel made numerous back-to-back saves when Colgate tried to stuff in the rebound. Schoedel needs to stop 14 more shots to tie her total from last season at University of New Hampshire.
