PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of Orange men’s soccer players earned recognition from the BIG EAST Conference on Monday, Oct. 20 for their performances in Syracuse’s 1-0 shutout of DePaul last week. Senior Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and junior forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) was selected to the conference’s weekly honor roll.
It’s the first time Wasielewski has been honored by the league and the second time this season Perevegyencev has been picked to the honor roll.
Wasielewski led an Orange defense that allowed just one shot on goal and five shots overall against the Blue Demons on Oct. 18. He has started all 13 matches for the Orange on defense and has helped the team to eight shutouts this year, the most for an SU squad since 1989.
Perevegyencev scored his second game-winning goal of 2008 in the 86th minute of the DePaul match to propel the Orange to victory. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the year and he is tied for the team scoring lead with 10 points.
The other BIG EAST individual award winners this week were: Trevor Chiduku of St. John’s (Offensive Player of the Week), Matt Williams of Cincinnati (Goalkeeper of the Week) and Tony Casio of Connecticut (Rookie of the Week).
Syracuse wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule at home on Tuesday, Oct. 21 against Adelphi. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Parking and admission for the match is free.
