SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior forward Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) scored all three Orange goals as Syracuse (7-4-3) concluded its non-conference schedule with a 3-2 win against --/RV Adelphi at the SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The victory extended the Orange’s non-conference unbeaten streak to 20 games and marks the third straight year the team posted an unbeaten record in non-league action (4-0-2). The win also ended the Panthers’ nine-game winning streak coming into Tuesday’s match.
Schomaker’s hat trick was the first for an SU player since Kirk Johnson achieved the feat against Providence in 2001. Schomaker's three goals and six points were both career highs and tied the SU Soccer Stadium record in both categories.
Syracuse attacked early, recording two shots on goal in the game’s opening minutes, but it was Adelphi (9-5-0) that struck for the first score. Patrick Figueiredo netted his team-leading 12th goal of the season at the 10:37 mark to put the Panthers in front, 1-0.
Schomaker evened the match in the 27th minute when he buried a rebound after Kyle Hall’s (Toronto, Ontario) shot attempt deflected to him.
The match remained tied at one goal apiece until the 61st minute. With the Orange applying offensive pressure, senior Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) fired a sliding shot that was stopped by Adelphi keeper Thorne Holder. Holder couldn’t control the rebound and Schomaker converted again to put the Orange in front, 2-1.
Thirty-four seconds after Schomaker’s second goal, Adelphi’s Mark Hoffman received his second yellow card and was ejected from the match. Playing down a man seemed to ignite the Panthers who tied the game less than two minutes later on a goal by John Koutsounadis at 62:42.
But Syracuse and Schomaker could not be denied. The Orange continued to force the action until junior Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) found Schomaker in transition and he ripped a shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar and rolled across the goal line for the game-winner at 75:30.
Syracuse outshot the Panthers, 11-6, for the match and put seven shots on goal to two for Adelphi. Holder finished the match with four saves for the Panthers.
Senior Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) played all 90 minutes in goal for Syracuse to earn his 25th career win. He moved ahead of Kevin Bacher into sole possession of fourth place on the team’s all-time wins list.
The Orange will play its next two games on the road. Syracuse returns to BIG EAST action Saturday, Oct. 25 with a 7 p.m. match at Cincinnati before heading to Villanova on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
