
Befort Named Defensive Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore back Maggie Befort has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Orange to a 2-0 record last week. She was also named the Defensive Player of the Week on September 15. Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the third time after recording a BIG EAST best 11 points last week.
Befort led a defense that only allowed one goal, seven penalty corners and 11 shots as No. 3 Syracuse improved to 17-1 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST. She dished out two assists in Syracuse’s 5-0 victory against Villanova on Oct. 24 and one assist in SU’s 3-1 win against No. 14 Boston College on Oct. 26. Syracuse tallied its eighth shutout of the season against the Wildcats. Befort’s 20 assists rank second on SU’s single-season chart and her 32 career helpers are third on Syracuse’s career list.
Befort’s accolade marks the seventh for the Orange. Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica was named the Offensive Player of the Week on October 13 on September 22. Taylor earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades on October 5 and September 9. Freshman back Anne-Sophie Van der Post started the run with Defensive Player of the Week praise on September 1.
Taylor registered her fifth hat-trick of the season in SU’s 5-0 victory versus BIG EAST foe Villanova on October 24. Taylor added an assist to complete the seven-point effort. She followed that performance with one goal and two assists in SU’s 3-1 win against No. 14 Boston College on October 26. Taylor’s 67 points and 25 goals are both Orange single-season records. Her 15 assists rank tied for fourth on Syracuse’s single-season list.
Taylor brings Syracuse’s BIG EAST Honor Roll honoree total to 11. Befort earned the award on October 20 and October 6. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess was named to the Honor Roll on October 13 and September 9. Van der Post earned the accolade in two consecutive weeks (September 22 and 29). Loncarica (September 15) and freshman forward Lindsey Conrad (September 1) round out the list.
The Orange concludes the regular season at No. 20 Rutgers (13-5, 1-4) on Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m.
