Syracuse athletics made it through another busy week of the fall season. The field hockey team improved to 17-1 overall with wins against Villanova and Boston College. The men’s soccer team posted an exciting 3-2 victory against Adelphi and a tough 1-0 loss to Cincinnati, while the women’s soccer team closed out its 2008 season with two BIG EAST setbacks to UConn and Providence. The women’s volleyball team swept the Siena Saints, 3-0, but could not pull of a victory against the tough BIG EAST travel party of Cincinnati and Louisville. The men’s and women’s cross country teams dominated the 22nd John Reif Memorial Run with several members in the top ten in both the 5K and five mile races. The men’s and women’s rowing teams hit the water at the Princeton Chase with five boats finishing in the top ten. Swimming and Diving and ice hockey both had the week off, but are preparing for a busy upcoming weekend.
Field Hockey
The No. 3 Syracuse University field hockey team had another successful weekend posting wins against Villanova and No. 14 Boston College. On Friday, the Orange recorded its eighth shutout of the year in a 5-0 victory against the Wildcats. Senior Shannon Taylor led the team with three goals and one assist to bring her season point total to 63. Sophomore Lindsey Conrad added two goals to the Orange total. On Sunday, the Orange celebrated senior day with a 3-1 victory against BC. Heather Doran, Heather Hess, Brittany Shannon and Taylor were honored prior to the start of the game. Conrad, Taylor and freshman Martina Loncarica accounted for the three Syracuse goals to bring SU’s record to 17-1. Syracuse’s overall record and .944 winning percentage are the highest among any team in the NCAA.

The Syracuse men’s soccer team began its week with an exciting 3-2 win against Adelphi at home in the SU Soccer Stadium Tuesday night. Senior Spencer Schomaker scored all three goals for the Orange and is now the scoring leader for the Orange with 14 points. His hat trick was the first since Kirk Johnson’s against Providence in 2001. On Saturday night, Syracuse’s two-game winning streak was cut shot in a 1-0 loss to Cincinnati. Senior keeper Robert Cavicchia made five saves in the game to bring his career total to 286.

Volleyball
The volleyball team was able to avenge an early season loss to Siena on Tuesday night when it swept the Saints, 3-0. The Orange set a BIG EAST scoring record for largest margin of victory this season when it won the second set, 25-3. Over the weekend, the Orange faced the tough travel party of Cincinnati and Louisville. Freshman Noemie Lefebvre led the Orange in both matches recording 35 total kills. She also registered double-digit digs in both matches with 17 and 10, respectively.

Bellingham was SU’s leading scorer this season, tallying eight goals and 17 points. Ten seniors closed out their Orange careers at the Providence match.

Cross Country
The men’s and women’s cross country teams dominated the 22nd John Reif Memorial Run this past weekend. Four Orange women finished in the top ten of the 5K race. Sophomore Katie Hursey won the event with a time of 18:44, while freshman Natalie Busby finished second with a time of 19:05. Sophomore Liz McCarter (19:26) and Lisa Giacometti (19:45) rounded out the top finished for the Orange finishing seventh and ninth, respectively. Five Orange men finished in the top ten of the five-mile race. Freshman Forrest Misenti won the race with a clip of 26:15 running as an unattached runner. Behind Misenti were freshmen Brady Becker (3rd, 26:25) and Zach Rivers (7th, 26:53), sophomore Erin Schrim (9th, 27:01) and junior Anthony Socotch (10th, 27:20).

Women’s Ice Hockey
The women’s ice hockey team spent last week preparing for its first home game ever. The Orange will host Sacred Heart Halloween night at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. The Orange hope to carry the momentum from its first program win against Quinnipiac into the weekend.
