
Looney, Rowan and Rogers Named 2009 Team Captains

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seniors Bridget Looney and Katie Rowan and junior Lindsay Rogers will serve as team captains for the 2009 Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad head coach Gary Gait announced on Friday, Oct. 31.
Looney and Rowan also served as team captains last season, while Rogers will serve in the role for the first time.
Looney returns to action after missing most of the 2008 campaign with a knee injury. In 2007, she earned All-BIG EAST second-team honors after leading the team with 42 ground balls and a school-record 33 caused turnovers. She ranked second in the BIG EAST and 18th nationally with 1.83 caused turnovers per game. Looney recorded a career-high 17 points on 13 goals and four assists. She set a single-game school record with eight caused turnovers against Colgate.
Rowan was named to the All-America First Team in 2008, becoming the first two-time first-team All-American in the program’s history. She is the Orange’s all-time leader in points (284), goals (178) and assists (106). In 2008, Rowan led the nation in scoring, setting the school’s single-season scoring record with 142 points, and tied the NCAA single-season mark with 69 assists. She earned the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year award and was the Most Outstanding Player at the conference tournament. In addition, Rowan was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award and Honda Sports Award.
Rogers earned second-team All-America accolades last season and became the first member of the Orange to earn the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year award. She helped the SU defense hold its opponents to less than 10 goals 14 times. Rogers, a first-team All-BIG EAST selection, recorded career highs with 25 ground balls, 34 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers. She was also named to the All-Northeast Region First Team.
The Orange enjoyed the most successful season in school history in 2008. Syracuse won a school-record 18 games and claimed the BIG EAST regular-season and tournament titles. The Orange earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament where it made the school’s first-ever appearance in the national semifinals.
