SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The second-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team pelted the Yale cage with 30 shots and suffocated the Bull Dog offense in its 3-0 victory at J.S. Coyne Stadium today. Three different players scored for the Orange and freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) broke the Syracuse single-season assist record. SU remained the nation’s lone undefeated team at 12-0, while Yale is now 2-7.
Loncarica broke the scoreless tie in the 19th minute, converting a penalty corner off a pass from senior midfielder Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, Va.). The two connected again with Taylor scoring her 15th goal of the season off a pass from Loncarica.
Loncarica now has a team-high 17 assists on the year, surpassing the old standard of 16 set by Maggie Fitzpatrick in 1988. Her 37 points are tied for fourth on SU’s single-season chart. Taylor’s team-best 39 points rank third on SU’s single-season list and her team-high 15 goals are tied for fifth.
Freshman forward Nicole Nelson (Telford, Pa.) capped the Syracuse scoring in the 48th minute. It was her fourth goal of the year.
Syracuse outshot Yale, 30-4, and held a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) finished with four saves, while Katie Bolling stopped 11 shots in the cage for Bull Dogs.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST Conference action when it travels to College Park, Md. to play Georgetown on Friday, October 10 at 6 p.m.
