SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Kacie MacTavish posted her fifth double-double of the season in Syracuse’s 3-1 setback to St. John’s. She contributed 13 kills and 12 digs in for the Orange against the Red Storm.
Leading the Orange was junior Sarah Morton who tallied 17 kills. Senior April Quigley set the pace for the offense with 30 assists. Freshman Noemie Lefebvre and senior Brittany Kern added four kills apiece.
The Orange out blocked the Red Storm, 13-7. Morton registered five total blocks and Quigley recorded four. In addition to MacTavish’s 12 digs, senior Marissa Kanemura contributed 12 digs and Lefebvre tallied 11.
The first set was close throughout. Despite falling behind by four points, the Orange fought back to take a two point lead midway through the frame. A timeout by St. John’s managed to slow the Orange momentum and the score was tied 15-15 only moments later. The Red Storm grabbed the lead back, but Syracuse wasn’t far behind. A kill by Lefebvre tied the set, 24-24, but Darlene Damdin and Kun Song of St. John’s tallied consecutive kills to close the match for the Red Storm, 26-24.
The Red Storm took the lead early on in the second set and never let go. The Orange fought back from a ten-point deficit, but it wasn’t enough to derail the Red Storm. St. John’s won, 25-16.
After a 10 minute intermission, the Orange regrouped and came out on fire. Syracuse grabbed the lead early and despite two timeouts by St. John’s in hopes of slowing the Orange, by midway through the team had a seven point advantage. The Red Storm battled back to within two points of the Orange, but Syracuse held on, capitalizing on a number of Red Storm errors. Morton secured a third set win for the Orange with a kill, 25-20.
The fourth set began as a back-and-forth affair until errors by St. John’s put the Orange up by four, 10-6. However, a kill by St. John’s Song switched the momentum to the Red Storm. Tied at 11-11, two Orange attack errors would give St. John’s the lead. Before winning the fourth and final set, 25-18, St. John’s would tally eight more kills to hold off the Orange.
Syracuse will spend the week preparing for another weekend of BIG EAST action. On Friday, October 10, the Orange will travel to Washington, D.C. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Georgetown. From there, Syracuse will head to warm Tampa, Fla. for a 2 p.m. game with South Florida on Sunday, October 12.
