SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Kacie MacTavish led the Syracuse University volleyball team with her sixth double-double
of the season in its 3-1 win against Georgetown. MacTavish tallied 13 kills and 10 digs in the match. The Orange won the first set in convincing fashion, 25-15, lost the second set by a score of 23-25, but came back to win the third set, 25-14, and the fourth set, 25-17.
“We knew going into this match that Georgetown was not the same team as last year,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Last weekend they beat both Pittsburgh and West Virginia. We were able to come out really strong and even though we lost the second set, we jumped on them right away in the third and fourth for the win. The Hoyas had a good home crowd, but we were able to stay really focused throughout the match.”
Joining MacTavish with double-digits kills was junior Sarah Morton, who posted 10 kills. Senior Brittany Kern registered nine kills on thirteen attacks for a team-high .615 attack percentage. Serving as the primary setter for the Orange was senior April Quigley. Quigley contributed 34 assists and three kills in the match.
Freshman Noemie Lefebvre and senior Marissa Kanemura joined MacTavish in double-digit digs. Lefebvre recorded a team-high 15 and Kanemura had 12. Morton led the team with seven total blocks, including two solo, while Kern and MacTavish each posted four total blocks. Syracuse out-blocked Georgetown, 15-7.
The Orange took the lead early in the first set leading 16-10 by midway through the frame. A Georgetown timeout would do nothing to slow Syracuse’s momentum. SU led 20-12 when the Hoyas took another timeout to no avail. A kill by Kern would give the Orange the first set win, 25-15.
The Hoyas weren’t going to give up so easily and came back fighting in set two. An error by the Orange would give Georgetown its first point. The score went back and forth for the first part of the frame, but the Hoyas eventually developed a three-point buffer, 14-11. From there, SU would tie the score three times but were unable to overtake Georgetown. Hoya Ashley Malone would win the set with an ace, 25-23.
Syracuse would post two more convincing wins in the final two sets of the match. The team started out the third set, going 4-0 before the Hoyas would get on the board. From there, the Orange quickly gained momentum and established a 10-point lead, 21-11. The Hoyas would score the next three points, but the Orange would close the set, 25-14.
Georgetown took the lead right away in the fourth set and was up 10-8 before the Orange made its move. From there, SU would grab six straight points to take a 14-10 lead. The Hoyas would tally three more points, but the Orange went on another six point scoring run to develop a 20-13 lead. By then SU was on a roll and MacTavish tallied her 13th kill of the match to secure Syracuse’s third BIG EAST win, 25-17.
