PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse senior midfielder Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, Va.) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for her role in Syracuse’s 2-0 record. Sophomore back Maggie Befort (Mechanicsville, Pa.) earned BIG EAST Honor Roll honors for her performances in the Orange’s two contests. This is the third time that Taylor has earned the BIG EAST weekly honors. She was named the Offensive Player of the Week on September 8 and to the BIG EAST Honor Roll last week. This is the second honor for Befort as she was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on September 15.
Taylor and the second-ranked Orange remained the only unbeaten team in the nation with two more victories last weekend. The senior racked up seven points on three goals and one assist in the two contests. Taylor added a goal and an assist in SU’s 3-0 victory against Yale on October 5. She also scored twice in SU’s 3-1 win at Albany on October 1. The senior’s team-best 39 points ranks third on Syracuse’s single-season list, while her team-high 15 goals are tied for fifth.
Taylor’s accolade marks the fifth for the Orange. Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the week on September 22. Befort earned Defensive Player of the Week on September 22. Taylor earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades on September 9 and freshman back Anne-Sophie Van der Post (Amsterdam, Netherlands) started the run with Defensive Player of the Week praise on September 1.
Befort dished out two assists in SU’s 3-1 win at Albany. She concluded the week with a stellar defensive performance in SU’s 3-0 shutout victory versus Yale. Befort’s 13 assists this season are the most ever by a sophomore at SU and her 24 career assists ranked tied for fifth all-time at SU. She is fifth in the nation and second in the BIG EAST in assists per game. She has also led the Orange defense to five shutouts.
Befort brings Syracuse’s BIG EAST Honor Roll honoree total to seven. Van der Post has earned the accolade in two consecutive weeks (September 22 and 29). Taylor was also named to the Honor Roll last week, with Loncarica (September 15), senior goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) (September 9) and freshman forward Lindsey Conrad (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) (September 1) rounding out the list.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST Conference action when it travels to College Park, Md. to play Georgetown on Friday, October 10 at 6 p.m.
