Syracuse Softball Unveils 2009 Schedule

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Head softball coach Leigh Ross released the 2009 Syracuse softball schedule earlier this week. The Orange will take on eight opponents that made it to the NCAA Regionals or better, including two teams that finished ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Head softball coach Leigh Ross released the 2009 Syracuse softball schedule earlier this week. The Orange will take on eight opponents that made it to the NCAA Regionals or better, including two teams that finished ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll.
The Orange opens its 2009 slate in the southwest the weekend of Feb. 6 at the University of New Mexico Tournament. The team will spend three days in Albuquerque, N.M. before returning to Central New York. The next weekend Syracuse heads south to Charleston, S.C. for the three-day College of Charleston Classic (Feb. 13-15). CofC went 33-33 in 2008 and finished third in the Southern Conference.
From there, SU will travel to Orlando, Fla. for the University of Central Florida Tournament (Feb. 27-March 1) where it will play five games. The Orange will face Maine, Eastern Michigan, Stony Brook, Tennessee State and UCF. Stony Brook, which finished 33-23, and UCF, which finished 49-20, both made it to the 2008 NCAA Regionals.
On March 6 and 7, the Orange travels to California to visit both Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Long Beach. Long Beach was the 2008 Big West Champion, finishing 40-17 overall and ranked 18th.
To wrap up preseason non-conference play, Syracuse will travel back to South Carolina for the three-day Winthrop University Tournament (March 13-15). Winthrop went 36-19 in 2008 and also made a trip to the NCAA Regionals.
The Orange opens BIG EAST conference play Saturday, March 21 at Seton Hall with a doubleheader. Before returning home, SU will play non-conference opponent Buffalo on Tuesday, March 24.
The gates of the SU Softball Stadium will open for the first time in 2009 on Friday, March 27 when the Orange hosts Pittsburgh for a doubleheader in its BIG EAST home opener. From there, SU will travel to Connecticut for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with the Huskies on March 29.
Syracuse returns home to host South Florida and Villanova for a pair of back-to-back doubleheaders (April 4-5). The Orange will travel to St. John’s Wednesday, April 8 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader before hosting Georgetown April 11. The Orange will step out of conference play on April 13 when it takes on Canisius, another 2008 NCAA Regional participant, and on April 15 when it plays Cornell.
SU will head back on the road for an April 18 matchup with Providence before returning to the SU Softball Stadium to host BIG EAST foe Louisville (April 19) and non-conference opponent Siena (April 22).
To wrap up regular-season play, the Orange will face three BIG EAST opponents. On the road, Syracuse will face DePaul (April 25), which finished 2008 ranked No. 21, and Notre Dame (April 26). Closing out its home slate will be Rutgers on Sunday, May 3.
The top eight teams in the conference will play for the BIG EAST Championship. The 2009 BIG EAST Softball Championship will be held May 7-9 at Ulmer Stadium on the Louisville campus.
