Syracuse Line Chart for RMU
The Orange will play its first College Hockey America game at Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 10 at the RMU Island Sports Center at 7:30 p.m. On March 6, 2008, the CHA announced the addition of Syracuse to its league slate, joining Mercyhurst, Niagara, Robert Morris and Wayne State. Friday night’s game on Moon Twp., Pa will be the first CHA game played in the 2008-09 season. Syracuse is 0-3-0 after a 4-3 loss at Colgate and two setbacks at second-ranked Wisconsin, 3-0 and 8-0. Robert Morris, 1-0-1, is fresh off an upset of third-ranked Minnesota in its first game, 3-2, but was later defeated by the Golden Gophers, 7-1.
Schoedel Shutting Them Down
Junior netminder Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) has turned some heads in the Orange’s three games this season. Syracuse ventured to the Midwest last weekend to face the second-ranked Wisconsin Badgers for a two-game set. Schoedel made 41 saves in Friday’s contest and backed it up with 24 saves in two periods of action. In the former UNH goalie’s debut in Orange, Schoedel played a superb game in goal, turning aside 34-of-38 Raiders’ attempts. Schoedel stopped 14 shots in the third period, but defended the pipes notably in the second period. The Orange was outshot 15-1 in the second session. Schoedel made numerous back-to-back saves when Colgate tried to stuff in the rebound. Schoedel needs to stop 29 more shots to eclipse her career at the University of New Hampshire. Schoedel’s 41-save performance in Madison ranks fourth best in CHA play so far.
Edmonton Enforcer
Freshman winger Janelle Malcolm (Edmonton, Alberta) is the first Syracuse’s skater to tally two goals in one game. Malcolm converted her first tally at 6:48 of the first period to give the Orange a 2-0 advantage over Colgate in its pioneering contest. Malcolm crashed the net in the waning seconds of the third period to dump one in with just 00:40 seconds remaining to inch within one goal, 4-3. Originally, the final marker was awarded to freshman forward Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta), but upon further review, Malcolm was the last one to touch the puck. Malcolm has totaled a .667 shooting percentage to lead the Orange thus far.
Skelly’s Got Skills
Freshman Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) put her stamp on Orange hockey after she scored Syracuse’s landmark first goal just nine seconds into the Colgate game. Skelly’s quick tally may be a Syracuse record for fastest goal scored for many a long time. She also earned the assist on Malcolm’s second goal. Skelly and Malcolm pilot the Orange for most points thus far with two.
Rise Up
Sophomore forward Julie Rising (Millbrae, Calif.), one of two Syracuse captains, leads the Orange in most shot attempts. Rising registered three shots at Colgate, three shots in Friday’s affair at Wisconsin and two more on Saturday at the Kohl Center for a total of eight. Rising (2.67 spg) is third in the CHA behind Wayne State’s Melissa Boal (10.5 spg) and Niagara’s Ashley Riggs (6.00 spg).
Sin Bin Leaders
Two of Syracuse’s blue-liners, senior Nikki Leone (Trenton, Ontario) and Taylor Metcalfe (Oakville, Ontario) have spent the most time in the penalty box for the Orange through three games. Both Leone and Metcalfe have served three infractions apiece for six minutes.
Breaking in the Pads
Freshman Steph Jones (Thornhill, Ontario) started the third period of the second Wisconsin contest and thwarted nine Badgers’ shots in her Syracuse debut. Jones earned a .935 save percentage with Markham-Stoufville and compiled a 23-5-3 record, including 15 shutouts.
Confrontation with the Colonials
Robert Morris traveled to Minneapolis to take on the third-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers for a two-game series at Ridder Arena. On Friday night, the Colonials upended Minnesota, 3-2, to get their season off on the right foot. The Colonials gave the Gophers their first season opener loss since the program’s start in 1997. The Golden Gophers triumphed, 7-1, in the ensuing contest. Robert Morris has a formidable puckstopper in senior Brianne McLaughlin. McLaughlin was awarded the USCHO National Defensive Player of the Week award for last week’s 63-save performance in RMU’s victory. McLaughlin backed up her big day with another 43 stops for a CHA-leading 106 saves in just two contests. Four of the nine goals the senior netminder has let in have been on a man-down situation. She has won 11 CHA and three USCHO.com awards through her four-year career. Eight RMU skaters have tallied one point this season with Morgan Biekirch leading the Colonials offensive charge with four shots.
