SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Eric Devendorf and sophomore Jonny Flynn sparked Syracuse in a come-from-behind, 76-71 victory, against the Richmond Spiders in front of 16,260 fans in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, November 18. Flynn led all scorers with 27 points, while Devendorf recorded 22 points, including 18 in the second half, in the second game of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.
After the Orange (2-0) trailed by seven, 38-31 at the intermission, Devendorf and Flynn took over the game in the second half. The squads opened the second 20 minutes by trading baskets before Devendorf scored 11 straight points in less than two minutes to give the Orange the lead for good. He hit three straight three-pointers and then added a basket to put Syracuse up by four. On the Orange's next possession, Devendorf fed Arinze Onuaku for a layup as SU hit its first six shots of the first half and led 47-41 with 15:07 left in the game.
Richmond (1-1) wouldn't go away and cut the Orange's lead to one, 51-50, with 10:26 remaining. But Flynn and Devendorf were too much for the Spiders. The two combined for Syracuse's next 14 points, and Onuaku's back-to-back dunks capped an 18-8 scoring run that gave the Orange its largest lead of the game of 11, 69-58, with 4:01 left in the game. Flynn scored seven of Syracuse's final eight points to finish just one point shy of his career high.
Richmond used a 13-4 scoring run to end the first half to build a seven-point halftime advantage. The Spiders were 7-of-13 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, but converted only 1-of-12 in the second half.
Devendorf hit 7-of-8 shots, including 4-of-5 from three point range, in the second half. Flynn also found his shooting touch in the second stanza, hitting 5-of-8 from the field. While Devendorf and Flynn were keys in the second half, Onuaku kept the Orange in the game in the first half, hitting all five of his shot attempts. He finished with 17 points. The three combined for 66 of Syracuse's 76 points.
The Orange outrebounded the Spiders, 36-28, led by Kristof Ongenaet's seven. Flynn led the Orange with five assists. Four Richmond players reached double figures in scoring, led by David Gonzalvez's 18.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome on Friday to take on Oakland at 7 p.m.
