SYRACUSE – Syracuse field hockey senior midfielder Shannon Taylor was named one of the four finalists for the 2008-09 Honda Sports Award for field hockey. Now in its 33rd year, the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program recognizes annually the top woman collegiate athlete in each of 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, each of whom receives the Honda Sports Award. The winner after nationwide balloting will become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.
Taylor was recently named a First-team 2008 Longstrenth/NFHCA Division I and womensfieldhockey.com All-America. The senior was also named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Taylor was the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a member of the All-BIG EAST Tournament Team. The midfielder was a two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and three-time BIG EAST Honor Roll member. Taylor is first in the country in points and goals per game, 12th in assists per game. Taylor’s 79 points and 31 goals are both Orange single-season records. Her point total ranks tied for eighth (Jodie Carter, 1992-95) on SU’s career list and her 14 assists rank third on Syracuse’s single-season list. Taylor’s points and goals are both Syracuse senior records. Taylor was also named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team.
The other three finalists are Jennifer Long (Penn State), Lauren Pfeiffer (Iowa) and Susie Row (Maryland). Taylor is the second Orange to be a finalist for the award. Julie Williamson was a finalist in 1994-95.
