SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Mike Holmes (Jacksonville, Fla.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of November 3, 2008.
The Syracuse football team defeated Louisville on Saturday night at the Carrier Dome, 28-21. Holmes anchored the defense, recording eight tackles, all solo, as well as picking up his second fumble recovery of the season.
Holmes is tied for the conference lead with 0.25 fumble recoveries per game and is 10th in the BIG EAST with 6.5 tackles per game. He is also second in the conference with 25.2 yards per kick return. At South Florida, Holmes recorded posted a team-high 11 tackles, including a career-high nine solo, and returned four kickoffs for 92 yards. Earlier in the season against Pittsburgh, Holmes ran back a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown on Syracuse’s first possession … The last Syracuse player to return a kick for a touchdown was Max Suter’s return against Louisville last year. Holmes’ 90-yard dash is tied for 27th longest return in the nation this season. Holmes had seven kick returns for 207 yards against Pitt to set a Syracuse single-game record and is one yard shy of Miami’s Najeh Davenport’s single-game BIG EAST record of 208 yards (vs. Syracuse, Nov. 28, 1998).
Throughout his career, Holmes has compiled 116 total tackles, including 82 solo, with one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Holmes is also one of the Orange's kick returners. He has returned 34 kicks for 857 yards, including the electrifying 90-yard touchdown against Pitt. As a freshman, Holmes was one of 34 players to have played in all 12 games, including eight starts.
Holmes, who is enrolled in the College of Human Ecology, and the rest of the Orange football team takes on Rutgers on Saturday, November 8, at noon in Piscataway, N.J.
