OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team ventured across international borders over Thanksgiving weekend to take part in two exhibition contests with their neighbors to the North. Syracuse split its two-game stand in Ontario's capitol, defeating Carleton University by a final of 3-1 on Saturday night and suffering a 4-3 overtime loss at the hands of the University of Ottawa on Sunday afternoon at the Ice House.
On Saturday, the Orange peppered Carleton goaltender Amanda Muhlig with 10 shots, but Syracuse didn't find the back of the net until it was down a skater on the penalty kill. Sophomore co-captain Julie Rising (Anchorage, Alaska) busted the scoreless affair with a short-handed tally at 13:02 of the second period for the 1-0 lead.
Ravens' Jacqueline Everson fed Jennifer Slewidge the disc at 11:31 of the second stanza for the equalizer via powerplay fashion.
Freshman forward Kylie Klassen (Winkler, Manitoba) secured the game-winning goal with 10:21 remaining in the game. First-year defender Kelly Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) polished off the Ravens with the Orange's first powerplay goal at 9:31 of the final frame after freshman Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) offered Dimmen the puck for the 3-1 game clincher.
Junior netminder Alison Lee (Los Altos, Calif.) was called upon to man the cage for the Orange on Saturday afternoon. Lee turned aside 11-of-12 Ravens' attempts in her first full 60 minutes for Syracuse.
The Orange outshot Carleton, 31-12, in the victory.
Syracuse was back at it with the University of Ottawa Gee Gees on Sunday afternoon at the U of O Sports Complex.
Freshman winger Janelle Malcolm (Edmonton, Alberta) responded to the familiar Canadian surroundings with two goals against Gee Gees' goalie Jessika Audet. Sophomore co-captain Stefanie Marty (Nussbaumen, Switzerland) punched in a goal for SU, as well.
Kayla Hottot attacked the scoreboard first at 7:47 of the first period for the Gee Gees but Malcolm negated the tally with one of her own with one second remaining in the first period. Sophomore Rebecca Gordon (St. Catharines, Ontario) assisted Malcolm on the goal for her first point of the weekend.
Marty snuck one by Audet at 15:07 of the second period to take over the lead, 2-1. Skelly and Rising each etched their second points of the exhibition weekend in the scoresheet with assist to Marty in SU's second score. Malcolm stormed into the crease for the Orange's second short-handed goal of the weekend with 16 minutes remaining in the game for the two-goal edge, 3-1. Rising generated her second assist of the game in the short-handed situation.
The University of Ottawa scored two goals in the third period to force overtime. Cass Breukelman ended the sudden death overtime session just 4:11 into extra time, 4-3.
Freshman goalie Steph Jones (Thornhill, Ontario) started in net for the Orange in her return home to her native province. Jones stopped 21-of-25 shots against the Gee Gees.
Syracuse returns to regular season play this Friday, December 5, at 7 pm in Erie, Pa. The Orange collides with CHA opponent Mercyhurst for the second time of the season as SU seeks out its first conferences victory. Syracuse will double up on Saturday and take on the Lakers on November 2 at 2 pm.
