
Field Hockey BIG EAST Championship Weekend

STORRS, Conn. – The third-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team (18-1, 5-1) travels to Storrs, Conn. for the BIG EAST Championship. The University of Connecticut will host the event with the semifinals taking place on November 8 and the championship game on November 9. All games will be held at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
Syracuse earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. Syracuse ends the regular season with a 18-1 overall mark, with the 18 victories being a program best. The Orange finished with a 5-1 mark in conference play. Syracuse is enjoying its most successful year in program history. SU earned its first ever No. 1 ranking in the NFHCA Poll on Oct. 14 and became the first women’s team at Syracuse to ever reach No. 1 in a national poll.
For the first time since 2003, there is a three-way tie for the regular season title. Syracuse, Louisville and Connecticut all earned a share of the title after completing the regular season with 5-1 records in conference play.
Syracuse’s fifth-most familiar foe, SU leads the all-time series, 16-6-4. The Orange has won nine of the last 12 contests, including this season’s 4-2 win in Providence. Syracuse is 1-1 all-time against Providence on a neutral site. SU lost to PC, 3-2 in the 1991 BIG EAST Championship semifinals, but defeated the Friars, 4-1, in the semifinals a year later.
Syracuse defeated the Providence College Friars, 4-2, in BIG EAST Conference action at Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. on Friday, September 26. Four different players scored for the Orange, while senior goalkeeper Heather Hess registered three saves. The Orange held a 15-6 advantage in shots during the game.
No. 4-seed Providence (12-8, 3-3) won its only game last week to finish the regular season with a 12-8 overall record and 3-3 in conference play. On November 1, Providence defeated No. 17 Massachusetts 3-2 in overtime to snap the Minutewomen’s seven-game winning streak. Senior forward/midfielder Meghan Holden tallied her second goal of the season to win the game with 6:36 left in the extra session. Nellie Poulin has recorded a team-best 16 goals and 33 points. Adrienne Marois has dished out a team- high 10 assists. Rachel Chamberlain has seen every minute in cage, registering a 1.56 goals-against-average and a .758 saves percentage. Providence (12-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) is receiving votes in the NFHCA Poll for the second consecutive week.
