STORRS, Conn. – Three different players scored as the top-seeded Syracuse Orange field hockey squad posted a 3-1 victory against fourth-seeded Providence in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex at the University of Connecticut. The Orange secured its first BIG EAST Tournament victory since winning the championship in 2001.
“I am really proud of how our team came out and competed today,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “We showed a lot of composure, both at the beginning of the contest and again after Providence tied the game. We look forward to competing for a championship tomorrow.”
Sophomore Maggie Befort (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) scored the game’s first goal of the game at 4:04. She was able to put home a rebound off a senior midfielder Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, Va.) shot created by SU’s first penalty corner of the day. It was Befort’s seventh goal of the season.
PC’s Jessica Lane tied the game at 12:32. She beat senior goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) stick side after taking a pass from Adrienne Marois stemming from the Friars’ first penalty corner of the contest.
Taylor put Syracuse up, 2-1, at 32:39, converting on SU’s fourth penalty corner. As usual, Befort provided the push and freshman back Martina Loncarica (Buenos Aries, Argentina) was there with the stop. It was Taylor’s 29th goal of the year.
Sophomore forward Kristin Girouard (Oak Hill, Va. ) extended the Orange lead to 3-1 with 22:48 remaining in the contest. Girouard scored her fifth goal of the season by deflecting a free hit from sophomore back Anne-Sophie Van der Post.
SU outshot PC, 23-4, and held a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners. Hess made three saves for the Orange. Rachel Chamberlain made 10 for the Friars.
