Syracuse earned a penalty corner right before time expired in regulation. Befort scored the lone goal of the game after tipping in the ball on a pass from sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.).
The first half was a defensive battle between both teams. The Huskies had their best scoring chance in the first half when Lauren Aird took a shot in front of the net, followed by Jill Kleeblad grabbing the rebound and taking a shot that was wide.
Overall, shots were 18-6 in favor of Connecticut. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, pa.) was brilliant in cage, making nine saves on the day, while UConn goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero made one save.
Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, Va.) of Syracuse was named the most outstanding player of the 2008 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. In the championship final, Taylor had two shots and made two defensive saves. In Saturday’s semifinal against Providence, Taylor scored one goal for the Orange.
