SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The fifth-ranked Syracuse women's lacrosse team started the 2008 campaign in record-setting fashion with a 24-3 win against Canisius in front of 568 in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, February 20. The Orange set single-game records for most goals scored and largest margin of victory. The win was the first for Syracuse under the direction of head coach Gary Gait.
"It was nice to get out on the field," Gait said. "It was a long preseason and it was nice to have an opponent to play. I was very pleased. For a first game, we were pretty sharp."
Sophomore Christina Dove got the high-powered Syracuse offense rolling with the first goal of the season 1:57 into the game on an assist from Awehiyo Thomas. Dove found the back of the net again just 13 seconds later as the Orange jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Canisius got on the scoreboard when Chelsea Martinez found the back of the net with 2:47 remaining in the first half before freshman Elise Terracciano and junior Katie Rowan scored in the final 1:24 of the half to give Syracuse a 14-1 halftime advantage.
The second half featured more Orange offense as seven different players tallied goals. Syracuse continued to build its lead, and Breanna Stiff's goal with 1:52 remaining gave Syracuse a 24-2 lead. The Griffs' Lauren Walsh scored with 1:21 left on the clock for the 24-3 final.
While the Orange offense was clicking on all cylinders, the Syracuse defense was stifling, allowing Canisius just 10 shots on goal compared to 50 for the Orange. Syracuse recorded 16 groundballs to the Griffs' seven.
Rowan finished the game with six goals and three assists to pace the Orange attack. Dove had four goals, while Halley Quillinan and Elise Terracciano had three goals each as 10 different players found the back of the net. Freshman Liz Hogan made her first start in goal and recorded four saves.
Syracuse's 24 goals is the highest single-game total in school history. The Orange had scored 23 goals on three occasions, including twice during the 2007 season. The 21-goal margin of victory is also a school record, besting the 20-goal win against Connecticut in 1998.
The Orange will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts No. 17/14 Dartmouth in the Carrier Dome at Noon on Sunday. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Syracuse men's lacrosse team.
