BALTIMORE, Md. – Syracuse University junior Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y) and sophomore Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) have been named to the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, which was released on Thursday, Feb. 21 by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. Rowan and Quillinan were two of 44 women’s lacrosse players, spanning all NCAA divisions, to make the list.
Rowan, the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, recorded one of the most prolific scoring performances in the program’s history in Syracuse’s season opener against Canisius, recording nine points on six goals and three assists. The nine points tie her for third on Syracuse’s single-game scoring list and marks just the fourth time in the history of the program that a player has recorded nine or more points in a single game. Rowan and Kim Wayne hold the single-game school mark of 10 points.
Quillinan also started the 2008 season strong, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists against Canisius. Last season, Quillinan earned a spot on the IWLCA All-America Third Team, becoming the first freshman in school history to earn All-America accolades.
The Tewaaraton Trophy has been presented to the nation's Most Outstanding Player each year since 2001. The award will be handed out on May 29 at the eighth annual awards ceremony that will take place at the National Museum of the American Indian.
The fifth-ranked Orange returns to action on Sunday against No. 17/14 Dartmouth at noon in the Carrier Dome. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Syracuse men’s squad. Admission is $5 for adults up until halftime of the women’s game. After that the cost is $8, the price of an men’s lacrosse individual ticket.
