WACO, Texas – The Orange softball team completed competition at the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor on Sunday with a pair of setbacks. SU lost to Purdue, 10-0, in five innings and then to No. 7/10 Baylor, 6-1. Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling went 2-for-4 on the day, while freshman utility player Tawni Irvine registered her second hit in as many games.
The Orange jumped out early on the Bears when sophomore Ev Anderson led off the bottom of the first with a single down the third baseline. Kelling followed Anderson, but was thrown out at first by junior third baseman Brette Reagan. As Anderson was advancing to second, Baylor senior first baseman Jordan Daniels threw the ball away attempting to get the runner at second. The ball went into an empty leftfield and Anderson scored from second.
Syracuse carried the momentum into the top of the second and Kelling made a heads-up defensive play with a runner at second base. Baylor freshman Megan Weldon grounded to short where Kelling faked the throw to first and tagged Daniels who was cheating off second base.
Baylor used one-run third and fourth innings before scoring three in the fifth. A solo shot by Daniels in the seventh secured the Bear's victory.
Senior Chanel Roehner is now 0-2 on the mound this season. She pitched 3.1 third before freshman Angie Sagnelli pitched 3.2 innings in relief. Baylor sophomore Kirsten Shortridge earned her first victory of the year by going to the distance.
In game one, Purdue used three runs in the second and seven in the fourth for the five-inning victory. Junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek and junior catcher Amy Kelley each registered their second hits of the season.
Kelley caught Purdue sophomore Amy Butcher stealing in the fifth inning. Kelley threw out two base runners during the tournament.
Sophomore Brittany Gardner pitched 4.0 innings, struck out two and is now 0-1 this season. Baylor junior Dana Alcocer went all five to improve to 2-1 this season.
Syracuse left four runners on base, while Purdue left nine stranded.
The Orange returns to the diamond at the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina on Friday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 23. The three-day affair will include Syracuse and East Carolina as well as Purdue and Penn State.
