Members of the Orange football squad participated in a job interview today in the Carrier Dome. Student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility worked out for a number of NFL scouts and coaches, participating in the 40-yard dash, standing broad jump, agility drills, vertical leap test and bench pressing. In addition, safeties Joe Fields and Dowayne Davis, and linebacker Jameel McClain displayed their skills in individual position workouts. McClain and wide receiver Taj Smith also auditioned for the NFL scouts at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February.
"The drills we do every day in practice with our position coaches really prepared us for today," Davis said. "We work on all of those drills every single day. It paid off for us today at this workout."
The Pro Day, held every year in March for all Syracuse seniors, drew the attention of many NFL teams, including the New York Giants, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts.
"I had so much energy today," Field said. "This is the biggest audition of our life to this point. I am very happy with my performance. They want to see you move and see how fluid you are. All of the work we have done for the past two months paide off today. I feel like I have some of my best football ahead of me. I am ready for a chance. If for some reason football does not work out, I have my education to fall back on. After I am finished playing I want to get into coaching and teaching."
