Orange Rewind
Junior Maria Vasilyeva collected consecutive singles victories in the Orange’s 5-1 loss at Central Florida and 6-1 setback at No. 44 South Florida. Vasilyeva’s 7-6 (7-2), 7-2 win against the Bulls was her team-leading 11th of the season and the 80th of her Syracuse career.
She returned to the No. 3 position against the Bulls, where she owns a 7-4 record this season. Vasilyeva is 8-2 in her last 10 singles matches.
BIG EAST Improvement
In head coach Luke Jensen’s first year with the Orange, the tennis squad collected a 4-3 record against teams from the BIG EAST. Sunday’s contest with the Panthers gives SU the opportunity to eclipse that win total at just the mid-way point of the month of March.
Syracuse opened the 2008 season with a perfect 4-0 start against BIG EAST
opponents. The Orange began the season with convincing 6-1 and 7-0 victories against Cincinnati and Georgetown. SU will look to end a three-match skid against conference foes versus the Panthers on Sunday.
Pittsburgh • 4-6
The Panthers arrive in the Salt City with a 4-6 overall record and 2-1 mark against BIG EAST opponents. Pittsburgh snapped a three-match losing in its most recent outing, a 7-0 sweep of Youngstown State.
Kristy Borza paced the UP attack versus the Penguins with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position. Elizabeth Adams and Leah Friedman collected identical 6-2, 6-2 triumphs at the 3 and 6 spots, respectively. Friedman became the program 11th member of the 100-win club against YSU.
Pittsburgh opened the season with a 6-1 win against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. Since the victory, the Panthers have split against conference foes Cincinnati and West Virginia. Against its rival the Mountaineers, Pittsburgh totaled a 4-3 win. The Panthers are 0-4 on the road this season and will meet Providence on March 21 and St. Bonaventure on March 22.
