SYRACUSE, N.Y. –The Syracuse women’s rowing crew opened its spring season with six races today at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbanch Park. The Orange played host to Boston University, Boston College and the University of Buffalo. The four crews faced light choppy waters and a slight head wind.
After the regatta SU christened its newest racing shell, The Iacovangelo Family. The vessel shell dedicated by the Iacovangelo family honors the commitment of Francesca Iacovangelo. Iacovangelo graduated from Syracuse University in 1999 with a degree in policy studies. At Syracuse, she walked on as a freshman and rowed the whole year, and then made the decision to come back her sophomore year as manager. She was the manager for the next three years.
“Fran was a great manager and one who made it hard for anyone following in her footsteps,” head coach Kris Sanford said. “She helped to keep me organized and also helped to keep things light in the coach boat.”
Syracuse defeated Boston College with a time of 7:26.3 in the second of two varsity eight races. The boat comprised of Tina Campagna (coxswain), Ally Doodeman (stroke), Natalie Mastracci (seven seat), Lindsay Lentini (six seat), Jess Tacinelli (five seat), Kaitlin Grant (four seat), Liz Henwood (three seat), Sarah Stapp (two seat) and Christine DePompeo (bow) went 1-1 on the day. Boston University took home the Kittell Cup in the day’s first event.
“Today showed we have a lot to learn and its early in the season,” head coach Kris Sanford said. “I also think today showed we have the tenacity and the attitude to have a successful season. I am satisfied with our efforts, but not our results."
The Orange also won the varsity four with a time of 7:52.6. The boat made of Kate Todd (coxswain), Maura Helmer (stroke), Ashley Tabor (three seat), Zaula Usman (two seat) and Susan Groff (bow) defeated Boston University by 13 seconds and Boston College by 24 seconds.
SU also took home both novice races, winning the novice eight race with a time of 7:59.3 and the novice four race with a time of 9:36.5. The eight boat comprised of Mikela Almeida (coxswain), Jacque Lee (stroke), Julie Ruskin (seven seat), Allison Ehrke (six seat), Mary Ellen Anderson (five seat), Ali Sayer (four seat), Laura Murphy (three seat), Brandis Arcadia (two seat) and Melody Miller (bow) defeated BU by two seconds and BC by 13 seconds. The four boat made of Catherine Wilcox (coxswain), Victoria Batha (stroke), Kelsey Wiemer (three seat), Alex Pines (two seat) and Jess Arevalo (bow) defeated BC by 14 seconds.
Boston University defeated Syracuse by eight seconds in the second varsity eight race. The racing shell containing Lydia Wong (coxswain), Erica Mahon (stroke), Ildiko Toth (seven seat), Chelsea MacPherson (six seat), Rachel Ogundiran (five seat), Heidi Bulk (four seat), Christine Turner (three seat), Theresa Alessio (two seat) and Mandy Dehaven (bow) had a time of 7:39.6
