Watch Out Spring Breakers: The Orange Heads to the USF Under Armour Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Orange softball team heads to sunny Clearwater, Fla from Friday, Mar. 7 through Sunday, Mar. 9 for its fourth tournament of the season. Syracuse will be playing in the USF Under Armour Invitational, which features 24 teams, hosted by South Florida. Seeded in the “B-Pool”, SU will open the tournament against Sam Houston State at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. The team’s second game directly follows at Noon versus Kennesaw. Day two pits SU against Indiana at 9:30 a.m., Quinnipiac at Noon, and Fairfield at 5 p.m. Single elimination begins on Sunday.
Junior catcher Amy Kelley's bat came alive during the NFCA Leadoff (Feb. 29 – Mar. 2) with a team-best .333 batting average, .583 slugging percentage and .429 on-base percentage. She also tied for first with two RBI and four hits. This season, she is tied for first on the team with four RBI and is second with eight hits and a .235 batting average.
Kelley hit her seventh career homer run when she went yard against Nebraska. Junior designated player Jorden Rosen also went deep last weekend with a two-run shot against No. 18/18 Mississippi State.
The Bearkats (10-6), winning five of their last seven, are led by senior Mandy Huckabee and freshman Whitney Wilson who boast batting averages of .440 and .438 respectively.
The Owls (14-5) won three-of-four at the Georgia State Spring Showdown (Mar. 1-2). With a 10-1 record and 123 strikeouts already this season, senior Brittany Matthews is the reigning Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week. Freshman
Lyndsay McCurry leads the team with a .350 batting average and 21 hits.
The Hoosiers (1-8) have lost their last four games despite senior Jenni Huddleston leading the team with a .370 batting average and 10 hits.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats (4-4) are coming off of two straight wins at the George Mason Invitational. Sophomore Jaime Iaquinto and freshman Danielle Davidson are the Akadema/NEC Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week.
The Fairfield Stags (1-4) opened the season with a 2-1 win over Detroit Mercy, but have lost four consecutive, including a 5-3 setback against Holy Cross in its last outing.
