Crunch Time For The Orange Softball Team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team will try and make a move up the BIG EAST standings this weekend when St. John's and Seton Hall come to the SU Softball Stadium for doubleheaders. The seventh-place Orange (14-25, 5-6 BIG EAST) plays host to the 10th-place Red Storm at 2 p.m. on Friday and then welcomes the 12th-place Pirates at noon on Sunday. After the weekend the Orange will have three BIG EAST doubleheaders remaining before the eight-team playoff begins.

Friday's matchup against St. John's will be the second and third time the two teams have met this season. The Orange weathered the Storm on March 15 at the College of Charleston Classic with a 3-2, nine-inning victory. Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling set the SU record for hits in a game when she went 5-for-5. She also produced the game-winning hit, a single to right field, to score freshman designated player Tawni Irvine.
The Orange produced nine hits during the contest and senior Chanel Roehner and sophomore Brittany Gardner shared time in the circle. Roehner threw 5.0 innings, striking out four before Gardner went 4.0 innings, earning the win.
SU returns home after a six-game road trip. The last time the Orange played at home, Gardner threw 11.2 innings, striking out 13 for a pair of victories against Niagara. She pitched 4.2 innings en route to a 6-4, game-one win and went the distance, striking out a season-high 10 in SU's 2-1, night-cap win.
Syracuse is 4-2 in the friendly confines of the SU Softball Stadium with sweeps against Providence and Niagara. Gardner owns a 3-1 record at home with a 0.55 ERA and 28 strikeouts. Junior catcher Amy Kelley is batting a team-high .438 with six RBI and a .813 slugging percentage.
Junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek is coming off a 4-for-6, four RBI doubleheader performances at Cornell on Wednesday. During game one, she went 3-for-3, including an RBI double and followed with a two run home run during game two. She is batting .257 this season with eight RBI, two home runs and 12 runs scored.
St. John snapped a 12-game losing streak by winning the second game against Marist on Wednesday, 10-0. The Red Storm lost the first outing, 4-1. The team’s last doubleheader sweep came against Army on April 2.
Brandy Reyes and Kacee Cox are the only members of the team batting above .300. Reyes leads the team with a .345 average with 40 hits. Cox is second with a .318 mark and leads the team with 29 RBI, seven home runs and a .576 slugging percentage. Kat Lawrence has appeared in a team-high 23 games, posting a 7-13 record and a 3.43 ERA. She has struck out a team-best 127 batters, but has allowed 16 home runs.
Seton Hall has split its last two doubleheaders. It won the first game against Providence 2-1 in eight innings on April 11, but lost the second in eight, 5-4. Against UConn on April 13, the Pirates won the first outing, 10-3, and lost the second, 3-2.
Kealan Waldron leads the way with a .353 batting average, 41 hits, 27 RBI and a .569 slugging percentage. Jenna Best and Leah Menichetti are also batting above .300 with Best at .317 and Menichetti boasting .307. Best has registered a team-high .459 on-base percentage, while Menichetti is tied with Waldron with a team-leading 22 runs scored. Ashley Forsyth has made a team-high 24 appearances in the circle, posting a 10-12 record and a 2.30 ERA. She leads the team with 79 strikeouts.
