PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honorable Mention after batting a team-high .500 with six hits and two RBI to lead the Orange to a 2-1 record, clinching a spot in the 2008 BIG EAST Championships. The conference announced Monday of Kelling's accolades, which is her second honorable mention accolade of the season.
Kelling, a tri-captain, was a spark in the Orange's pair of BIG EAST victories with timely hits against Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 26. During SU's 5-3 game-one win, she drove in the game-winning runs in the top of the six with a single to leftfield. In the team's 2-1 game-two win, she led off the contest with an infield single to third and eventually scored the first run of the game.
At Canisius on Wednesday, April 24, the Davenport, Iowa native led the team with three hits, including a double to lead off the game and scored two at-bats later.
In her first season for the Orange, Kelling is second on the team with a .321 average and a .444 on-base percentage. She leads the team with 51 hits, 23 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Defensively, she is second with 90 assists.
She earned her first BIG EAST recognition on March 17 after setting the school record with five hits in a game at the College of Charleston Classic. She is the first Orange student-athlete this season to earn two conference accolades.
The Orange returns to the SU Softball Stadium at SkyTop on Wednesday, April 30 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against DePaul. The team concludes BIG EAST play with doubleheaders on Friday against DePaul at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday against Notre Dame at 11 a.m., respectively.
