SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior outfielder Chanel Roehner went 4-for-7 and scored a run during the Orange softball team’s (12-19, 5-3 BIG EAST) doubleheader against Connecticut on Sunday at the SU Softball Stadium at SkyTop. The Huskies (15-13, 4-2 BIG EAST) prevailed in both games, winning the first, 9-1, in five and the second, 7-6.
“Connecticut took advantage when they had the opportunities,” said associate head coach Kyle Jamieson. “They got some timely hits and walked away with the ‘W’. We gave ourselves a good chance during the second game, but just came up short.”
Junior catcher Amy Kelley erased a 4-3 deficit during the sixth inning of game two when she sent a three-run home run the opposite way for her team-leading seventh long ball of the season.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the six as a single through the left side by Huskies sophomore first baseman Justyne Roy scored junior third baseman Tierney from third. Sophomore leftfielder Ev Anderson’s throw to Kelly reached home before Connecticut junior shortstop Jullian Ortega crossed home.
In the top of the seventh, UConn junior leftfielder Sarah Neuschwander hit the game-winning home run, a solo shot to lead off the inning.
Freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs registered an infield single with two outs in the seventh, but a deep fly ball by Kelley was held up by the inward-blowing wind and fell into the glove of junior centerfielder Micah Truax.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner cruised through the first three innings, whiffing seven batters and allowed the Orange offense to take advantage in the bottom of the third to break the scoreless tie.
Gibbs singled to leftfield to score junior shortstop Jamie Kelling. And Kelley followed with her fourth double of the season, just out of reach of Huskies junior right fielder Erin Burtner. Roehner and Gibbs both came around to score.
Connecticut rallied for a run in the top of the fourth with a two-out double by Burtner to score Truax.
Kelley led the team with a career-high tying five RBI and tied with Gibbs and junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek with two hits during the second outing.
Gardner went the distance, striking out eight and allowing only two earned runs to go to, 6-6, on the season. Sophomore pitcher Tricia Sullivan, who won the first game, came in the fifth inning and struck out three to go to, 9-6.
The Huskies used four runs in the first, three in the fifth and one run in the second and fourth during game won en route to its second conference win of the season.
UConn sophomore first baseman Justyne Roy paced UConn with three RBI and two hits (2-for-3). Freshman second baseman Julianne Towers and Truax each produced two hits and Truax drove in two runs.
The Orange got on the board in the bottom of the third when Roehner, who went 3-for-3 in the game, hit a two-out single to advance freshman designated player Tawni Irvine, who walked, to second base. Gibbs walked during the next at-bat and Irvine scored on a passed ball.
Roehner began the game in the circle but was relieved after four runs and freshman Angie Sagnelli pitched the rest of the way, allowing three earned runs. Roehner was given the loss and is now 6-6.
Sullivan went all five for the Huskies, striking out six and allowing zero earned runs.
Syracuse returns to its home field on Tuesday when Niagara comes to town for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
