Syracuse, N.Y. – The sixth annual Spring Challenge event on April 30, 2008 proved to be another success. Manley Field House roared with the competitive nature of 45 children from the Syracuse Boys and Girls Club, including participants from the Hamilton Street, East Fayette Street and Central Village locations. More than 40 Syracuse student-athletes served as team leaders and event coordinators, representing the football, volleyball, women’s soccer, track and field, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, swimming and diving and men and women’s rowing programs.
The Spring Challenge is designed to encourage youths to instill active lifestyles by introducing them to sports and physical activities. Children took part in seven sport-specific stations, such as football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, soccer and lacrosse. Fun was more of a factor in the competitions than athletic ability, as prizes were given to all the children for their efforts.
The Spring Challenge is just one of many 'Cuse Cares community service projects SU student-athletes are involved with in this area. The 'Cuse Cares Program, supported by Citizens Bank - New York, is the community outreach program for student-athletes at Syracuse University. SU's student-athletes have been recognized with SU's Chancellor's Award for Public Service and Community Engagement in each of the past 11 years for their volunteer efforts in the community. Citizens Bank invests in and is a leader in the communities it serves.
