No. 10 Orange Turns Its Attention to Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Syracuse men’s rowing team is in an immensely parallel situation heading into the Eastern Sprints as it was the last two seasons. The Orange won all four of its cup races this spring, just as it did that previous two years. SU remained 10th in this week’s USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll and is ranked seventh in the final EARC Heavyweight Varsity Eight Poll. The Orange varsity eight finished the dual race season with an 8-1 mark.
The Orange varsity eight boat is in Heat No. 1, set to launch at 10:54 a.m. against No. 1 Brown, No. 6 Columbia, No. 18 Boston, No. 13 George Washington and No. 18 Holy Cross. The Orange has already defeated Boston and George Washington in races so far this season. The Orange lost to Columbia on April 26 in the Conlan Cup. SU varsity eight finished the dual race season with an 8-1 mark.
Last year, Syracuse had two boats reach the grand finals and won the second varsity petite final. The Orange varsity eight reached the grand final for the first time since 1989 and came in sixth place. SU finished second in the third varsity eight grand final. Syracuse's second varsity eight won the petite final and came in seventh place overall. In the freshman eight race, the Orange finished fifth in the petite final and 11th overall.
SU and has not medaled since 1959, when the varsity eight came in second place.
Syracuse’s second varsity eight boat is ranked eighth in the EARC Heavyweight Second Varsity Eight Poll and is Heat No. 2 at 10:04 a.m. against No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 5 Cornell, No. 11 Columbia and No. 14 Penn. The Orange has already defeated Cornell and Columbia in races so far this season. The Orange second varsity eight finished the dual race season with an 8-1 mark.
The Orange freshman eight comes into the Eastern Sprints ranked sixth in the EARC Heavyweight Freshman Eight Poll. SU is slotted in Heat No. 1 at 8:56 a.m. against No. 1 Harvard, No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 12 Columbia, No. 10 George Washington and No. 18 Holy Cross. Syracuse has already defeated Columbia and George Washington in races earlier this season. SU freshman eight finished the dual race season with a 10-0 mark.
In the second freshman eight race, the Orange is ranked fifth. Syracuse is in heat No. 1 at 7:40 a.m. against No. 1 Harvard and No. 4 Wisconsin.
