Freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs hit a high chopper over the Notre Dame third baseman's head to score senior outfielder/pitcher Chanel Roehner and give SU its 12th conference win of the season – tied for the second highest conference win total in school history.
"We showed a lot of heart and showed what this team is capable of," said head coach Leigh Ross. "We struggled for a good bit today, but were able to recover and kept fighting. Now we have momentum and something to build on as we head into the conference tournament."
Syracuse (21-31, 12-10 BE), which lost the first game against Notre Dame, 8-0, finishes in sixth place in the BIG EAST and will face third-place Connecticut on Thursday, May 8 at Louisville. The appearance will be the fourth consecutive for the Orange and fifth all-time.
The Orange began its rally in the bottom of the seventh when junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek reached base on a dropped third strike. Junior first baseman Nicole Miller followed with a single up the middle and junior right fielder Jorden Rosen produced her fourth RBI of the day with a double to right center.
With runners on second and third and one out, junior shortstop Jamie Kelling hit a ball to shallow left which was misjudged by Notre Dame leftfielder Sarah Smith, who let the ball escape her glove and roll to the fence. Miller scored and Kelling ended up on third.
Roehner grounded to third but the pitter-patting feet of Kelling kept third baseman Linda Kohan from committing to a throw to first, allowing Roehner to reach on a fielder's choice.
Junior catcher Amy Kelley drove in Kelling and advanced Roehner to third with a single to right field. Gibbs walked to the plate with one out and came through with the game-winning hit. She made her 52nd start of the season, setting an SU freshman record for starts.
The Orange found itself trailing 5-0 after four-and-a-half, but found a spark when Rosen drilled a three-run home run to right-center. The home run was her second of the season.
The Irish put runs on the board in the sixth or the seventh, but the Orange responded for its sixth come-from-behind victory of the season.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner (13-12) was credited with the victory by pitching 2.0 innings, striking out one and allowing one earned run. Roehner started the game and threw 5.0 innings, striking out two. Notre Dame's Brittany Bargar (29-12) pitched 5.1 innings with an inning break between the fifth and the sixth.
The Orange began game one on a defensive high note when Gardner whiffed her third batter and senior Rachel Tilford, who was filling in as catcher, gunned down her second career runner to get SU out of the inning.
Gardner continued to roll allowing only one hit, which was a leadoff double in the top of the fourth. The sophomore and her defense responded by shutting down the next three batters. Gibbs made the first out of the inning on a leaping catch off a bunt by the BIG EAST home run leader Christine Lux.
The Fighting Irish found their groove in the top of the fourth with four runs on three hits and an error. ND shortstop Katie Fleury and Smith were both credited with RBI and both players crossed home plate.
Notre Dame second baseman Katie Laing added four more runs in the top of the seventh when she hit a line-drive grand slam over the right field fence. Her team loaded the bases with hits by right fielder Brianna Jorgensborg and Linda Kohan and a fielder's choice by Smith.
Gardner went the distance for the 16th time this season, while Bargar threw a complete-game no-hitter, striking out three.
Before the start of the game Roehner and Tilford were honored for their playing careers at Syracuse University.
The Orange heads to Louisville for the 2008 BIG EAST Championship from May 8-10.
