SYRACUSE – Syracuse head softball coach Leigh Ross announced the hiring of Wallace King as an assistant coach. King joins the Orange after his most recent success in the same capacity at Trine University (formerly Tri-State University) in Indiana. Last season, the Trine University program made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament. King’s primary responsibilities included working with the student-athletes in the areas of pitching and hitting. The Thunder shattered several school records, including most wins, runs, doubles and home runs.
“I am extremely thrilled to add someone with Wally’s knowledge and passion for the game of fastpitch to the SU softball staff,” Ross said. “He has played the game at the highest level and that experience will be key to the continual development of this program. What impresses me most about Coach King is his expertise in all aspects of the game and his commitment to train our players to play to their potential.”
King’s coaching resume displays experience and knowledge at multiple levels of the game. He successfully served as head coach of two large high school programs in the western Michigan area. For three years he served as an assistant at Grand Rapids Community College during which time it developed itself into a national title contender. He served in a voluntary coaching capacity at Bowling Green State University, as well as having extensive interaction with programs at the 18-under travel level. He is a highly sought after clinician and also has devoted a great deal of time to individual and team training.
As a competitor, King was able to travel around the world. Stints with the Midland Explorers and the Waterloo Hallman Twins resulted in top four finishes at the world tournament. He has played on a national championship team, received individual All-America accolades and was named a national tournament MVP.
“I want to thank Dr. Daryl Gross, head coach Leigh Ross and the other members of the Syracuse University athletic department for granting me the opportunity to become the newest member of the softball program at SU,” King said. “I consider it a great honor to work at one of the premier athletic departments in the country, and I am looking forward to the challenge of elevating the program to the national stage.”
King graduated from Hope College in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology. He earned his master’s degree in social work from Grand Valley State University in 1994. He has a number of years of experience as a public school social worker. His wife, Sue, is an elementary educator and they have four children.
