CLEMSON, S.C. – On her way to earning all-tournament honors, freshman Noemie Lefebvre tallied a team-high 13 kills in Syracuse’s 3-0 win against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Junior Sarah Morton led the team with five block assists and was second with 11 kills.
“We were able to get our offense going and keep it going throughout the match,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Noemie really started to shine. Her defense was good and she passed well.”
Senior Marissa Kanemura tallied 18 digs and two service aces, while freshman Hallie Morse posted 40 assists and five kills. Freshman Erin Little added 10 kills and senior Brittany Kern had a team-high three service aces and added six kills to the team totals.
In set one, the Orange took the lead early on with kills contributed by Lefebvre, Morton, Kern and Morse. The Buccaneers were able to keep the score tight, but kills by Morton and Lefebvre allowed the Orange to close the set, 25-23.
Syracuse capitalized on several errors on the Buccaneers’ part in set two and was able to take control offensively. Lefebvre tallied six kills and Morse posted 10 of her assists as the Orange won set two, 25-15.
The Orange controlled set three from the beginning. With the score tied, 3-3, Syracuse went on a nine-point streak before the Buccaneers could post another point. Despite a surge in effort from CSU, the Orange maintained a strong lead and won the final set, 25-17.
“We are glad to leave here on a positive note,” LaMarche said. “We have a lot of options this year and more depth than last year. Going into next weekend’s tournament, it’s good to leave here on a positive note.”
The Orange will be back on the road next weekend at the Delaware Invitational where Syracuse will face Delaware, New Hampshire and Michigan State. Michigan State and Delaware both made appearances in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Orange will open its home schedule on Tuesday, September 9 when it hosts Binghamton at 7 p.m. in Manley Field House.
