Newark, Del. – Senior April Quigley tallied 25 assists, while junior Sarah Morton posted a team-high eight kills against Michigan State in the opening match of the Delaware Invitational. Morton led the team with three total blocks but it was not enough as the Spartans won the match, 3-0.
“We played up a level from last weekend,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Our serve-receive and passing was good today and helped keep us in the game for a little longer. If we can play that level tomorrow, I think we have a chance to win.”
Freshman Noemie Lefebvre had seven kills, ranking second on the team in today’s game. Lefebvre has tallied 30 kills in her first four games as a collegiate volleyball player. Junior Kacie MacTavish and freshman Erin Little each had five kills. MacTavish is four kills away from her 700th career kill.
Defensively, MacTavish led the team with 11 digs, while senior Marissa Kanemura posted 10.
The Spartans did not waste any time getting on the board against the Orange, taking a four point lead from the start. An error by the Spartans and kills from Lefebvre and Morton put the Orange within two points of the Spartans. The Spartans managed to keep a strong lead throughout the set, leading 21-16, before the Orange scored four-straight points to bring them within one point of the Spartans. Syracuse could not keep the run going however, and the Spartans closed out the set, 25-20.
Morton tallied a kill right away in set two before the Spartans took the lead. The Orange stayed within one point of the Spartans during the first part of the frame, but the Spartans gradually took over and were ahead by five points when the Orange took back control of the set. As in set one, the Orange scored four-straight points but it was not enough to crush the Spartans momentum. MSU went on to win the match, 25-21.
Set three was a different story for the Orange as they maintained the lead for the first 11 points. A kill by Spartan Jenilee Rathje would tie the match 11-11. MSU controlled the second half of the set and despite kills from Morton, Lefebvre and senior Brittany Kern, the Spartans held the Orange to 18 points and won the set.
The Orange continue play tomorrow in the Delaware Invitational facing Delaware at 1 p.m. and New Hampshire at 5 p.m. Live stats are available here.
